Customizing Your Procedure
The chin augmentation will be customized based on your unique concerns, goals, and anatomy. Generally, Dr. Hallak suggests chin implants to correct an inadequate chin contour. When a patient has too large of a chin, Dr. Hallak will suggest a reduction surgery of the chin bone. Some individuals often request their chin to be augmented with a rhinoplasty procedure to ensure good balance and facial harmony. Often when the neck or jawline is improved with neck liposuction, neck lifting, or facelifting, a chin implant may be placed to “complete the play” to get a more pleasant cosmetic result.
How is the Chin Augmentation Performed?
Chin augmentation will be performed under general anesthesia or sedation to ensure patient comfort. During the procedure, Dr. Hallak creates a small, inconspicuous incision either underneath the chin or inside the mouth to place the implant over the mentum, or chin bone. After the implant is positioned, stitches are used to close the small incision. If chin reduction is being performed, cartilage and bone will be reshaped before the incision is closed. Chin augmentation is a relatively quick procedure, typically taking no more than 60 minutes.
What to Expect During Recovery
Recovery after chin augmentation is fairly quick with most patients returning to work and regular activity within a week. Discomfort is minimal and can be controlled with over-the-counter pain medication and the use of an ice pack. For several weeks, patients will be instructed to keep the head elevated and avoid strenuous activity and exercise. It is important to follow all post-op instructions carefully to ensure successful results.
