IS A SCAR REVISION THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR ME?
A scar revision comprises several methods that help minimize the appearance of various forms of scars. A typical scar revision procedure replaces the unsightly scar with a smaller, less obtrusive scar.
It does not matter if the unsightly scar happened because of a previous surgery or injury, a scar revision procedure can enhance your appearance and lead to an improvement of your skin. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2010, over 160,000 scar revisions were performed.
You might have a scar that is not very noticeable to others, but you see it and would like it to be less visible. A scar revision procedure is a basic type of reconstructive surgery that can help you achieve your goal. Most patients find that after their surgery, few people notice the treated scar unless they point it out themselves.
"Dr. Hallak is a very thoughtful surgeon who took the time to explain my options. He knew how important it was for me to obtain a stylish look without overdoing it. Although I managed to fill a 34D before my surgery, my breasts were uneven and had lost all fullness. In addition to my much-needed lift, I also wanted an areola reduction..
I had complete faith in Dr. Hallak and now after a breast lift, areolar reduction, and 400 cc high profile implants thanks to Dr. Hallak’s skillful hands, I am a sexy 36DD and my breasts are shaped beautifully and feel very natural. My sincere thanks to Dr. Hallak and his staff."
"Hello, I am a patient of Dr. Hallak's I had breast augmentation & this is my testimonial: Being fairly new to San Diego I went on to see many doctors for consults on having my breast implants replaced. I had saline implants for 11 years and was ready to replace them with silicone implants. I was very nervous and didn’t want a drastic change Dr. Hallak & his staff were incredible I had such a great experience really liked everyone at the surgery center also. I knew I was in good hands all of my questions were answered & concerns were addressed I’ve been so pleased with the results my new implants look so good and natural I’m always getting compliments when I’m out with friends. I’m very excited to show off my new look this summer on the beach. I couldn’t be happier with the decision I made to have Dr. Hallak as my surgeon! Thank-you"
Good Candidates for Scar Revision
You may make a good candidate for scar revision if you are generally healthy and a non-smoker. Since scars also tend to have an emotional component, you should inform Dr. Hallak of your goals to ensure you have realistic expectations regarding your results. If you are advised to have scar excision, you probably will not be able to have it performed until a minimum of six months after scar formation.
Some scarred patients may desire injections or basic skin resurfacing methods. A scar revision will not completely remove a scar, but it can make a great difference.
What to Expect from Scar Revision
You will receive a recommendation for the ideal scar revision method from Dr. Peters, depending upon the type and location of your scar.
The following techniques are possible scar revision methods:
Excision: A serial or partial excision surgery involves making an elliptical incision without necessarily removing the entire scar in one session. Follow-ups may be required.
Fusiform: A fusiform excision procedure involves the placement of an elliptical incision around the scar and tissue removal.
Skin grafts: A skin graft procedure can help repair small, round, or depressed scars. It involves removing skin from one part of your body and using it to lift the scar level with adjacent tissue.
Local flap: Local flap procedures use adjacent skin to conceal the scar. A W-shaped or Z-shaped incision is made to break up the scar, restore function, and make it less obtrusive.
In certain cases, such as local flap surgery, Dr. Hallak may perform tissue expansion methods that involve stretching the skin to allow for reconstruction. In cases where the scar is raised, he may reduce raised tissue to better match the nearby skin.
Scar Revision Recovery
Following your scar revision surgery, you may feel like your skin is tighter or experience some discomfort or swelling. If needed, pain medication will be available to reduce any discomfort. A dressing will cover your scar treatment area, and you may need to frequently change it to promote proper healing.
